Body Moisturizers

A rich body lotion or moisturizing cream can help relieve dryness on the body. This is especially useful as you get older and the skin naturally loses some of its natural oiliness. Body lotions are suitable for oily skin. Creams are richer, and better for dry skins. Some body moisturizers contain ingredients to help exfoliate the skin gently over time. If you have allergy-prone skin, avoid heavily scented products, which may cause a rash or inflammation.

Moisturizing Methods

  • Dry your skin with a towel until it is just damp.

  • Rub the moisturizer gently over your body. Applying it when you are still slightly damp helps to seal extra moisture into your skin, making it softer and smoother. Use firm, long strokes and massage the limbs at the same time, which can help to improve your circulation. You may not need a moisturizer over your entire body, but apply it to areas such as the lower legs, upper arms, elbows, and thighs, which are particularly prone to dryness.

  • If your skin is dry, avoid taking very hot baths or showers. They will make it even drier, and the high temperatures may encourage the development of broken veins.

  • Avoid staying in the bath or shower for longer than 20 minutes. Extended exposure to the water also encourages dehydration of the skin.

  • Shower gels and some bubble baths can leave a residual coating on the body. Be sure to rinse them off thoroughly; they can dry out the skin.

  • Dry yourself carefully, especially in nooks and crannies, such as between the toes. This helps to prevent athlete's foot and other fungal infections that thrive in damp environments.
